General Dentistry

Ideally, dentistry is preventative. It is normally recommend that everybody should visit dentist regularly – at least once every six months – to ensure proper oral hygiene and functionality. This is the same whether in  Thailand or Western.  Regular oral check up and maintenance prevent the development of serious dental problems that can require costly treatment. If you remain vigilant and visit your dentist regularly, you can enjoy exceptional dental health. Below is typical dental works when you see dentist for check up every year. This involve the prevention, diagnosis and treatment of a wide variety of conditions, disorders and diseases affecting the teeth, gums and maxillofacial (associated with the jaw and face) region of the body.

 Dental Cleaning

Dental cleaning means the professional the cleaning you can only receive from a dentist. A routine dental cleaning should include scaling root planning and polishing. The procedures can be divided as:-

1. Dental Scaling:
This is the removal of plaque and tartar from all tooth surfaces with different types of scaling being used in relation to the amount of plaque and tartar. Dentist perform traditional scaling by hand. Advances in technology have led to more modern methods such as Airflow which allow dental cleaning to be done in much clean. However to achieve best results electric and manual scaling should be combined in dental cleaning.

Airflow (Ultrasonic scaling) uses a machine called a cavitron which uses sound waves to remove tartar. Ultrasonic scalers can only remove 50% of total tartar buildup so hand scaling must follow cavitron scaling. People who wear pacemaker cannot get ultrasonic scaling because the ultrasonic sound can interfere with the function of the pacemaker.

2. Dental Polishing:
This is the finishing touch of rubbing on the surface of the teeth. There are two kinds of polisher the prophy jet polishing and rubber tip polishing with prophy paste. Prophy jet polishing works by spraying high pressured water mixed with baking soda paste onto the surface of your teeth. This powered water can wash away the residue and plaque while the baking soda removes the brown and yellow stains and neutralizes the acidic conditions in your mouth. Rubber cup polishing employs a low-speed hand piece with a rubber cup tip mounted on the top that contains a polishing paste that is made of abrasive ingredients ideal for removing stains.

 Dental Filling

There are only very few people who manage to avoid having cavity. If you’re like majority of people you probably have experienced a cavity. A cavity calls for your dentist to remove the decay and to fill in the tooth area that was removed in order to prevent further decay and strengthen the affected tooth. There have been lots of advances in modern dentistry that make this process much more comfortable and use materials that are safer and more esthetically pleasing. There are mainly 2 types of filings in Thailand:-

1. Amalgam:
lots of people still have had amalgam fillings. Lots of these fillings contain mercury which was said to be poisonous to the body as well as the environment. The amounts of mercury in the fillings however are not significant enough to be a real threat but amalgam fillings are generally not as advantageous as composite fillings because they demand more of a tooth removal, are susceptible to corrosion.

2. Tooth- colored (White) filling:
composite material fillings were created as an alternative to traditional metal dental fillings. Tooth-colored (White) filling look like a natural tooth are known as Composite Resin Dental Fillings and are made of a plastic dental resin combined with porcelain and glass particles. These types of fillings are, durable and are way more natural looking than amalgam fillings.

If you have a cavity in a tooth or broken fillings or if your teeth are full of mercury fillings, or amalgam fillings you may want to ask your dentist about changing to composite dental fillings . Mercury fillings or amalgam fillings can easily be removed and replaced with far more attractive colored fillings. Research shows that composite fillings actually strengthen your tooth and further protect it from decay
