Prosthodontic Dentistry

Proshotodontic Dentistry mainly refers to with dental restoration, replacement of teeth,  improving appearance and function to patient's smile. Most Prosthodontic works involved with dental crown, dental bridge, denture, inlay, onlay and implant. Sometimes, aesthetic is major reason for patient to see such works because works like dental crown can change shape or color of patient teeth. In Thailand, this area is very popular for medical tourists.

 Dental Crown

Dental Crown is a tooth-like covering placed over a carefully prepared existing tooth. Used to strengthen, restore or improve the appearance of your natural tooth a crown is placed on an individual tooth much like a thimble over your finger. One of the most common is to support the tooth when there is no longer sufficient tooth structure left to place a filling. There are several ways of restoring teeth, the most common being a filling or bonding. Crowns are used to strengthen a tooth and repair badly decayed, broken, severely discolored, misaligned teeth or capped the tooth after root canal treatment. Crowns may also be used to protect the structure of a tooth that is fractured or broken. Crowns completely cover teeth, restoring them to their natural color, size, shape, and function. The location of the crown in the mouth usually dictates the type of material used. The tooth under the crown is reduced in size. The crown will be permanently cemented over the reduced tooth. While you are waiting for the permanent crown to be fabricated, your dentist will provide you with a temporary one to wear. Crowns have a much longer life span than bonding, resist stains better, hold their color and resist chipping and cracking. Crowns, however, take longer to prepare than bonding and are not reversible. Your dentist can recommend which type of restoration is best for your particular situation. If the tooth is severely decayed, little tooth structure remains or after root canal treatment for the back tooth, it may be necessary to place a metal post into the tooth to support the crown. If this is the case, root canal therapy will be performed.

Dental Bridge

Traditional methods to replace a missing tooth or teeth include the fabrication of a bridge. To replace a missing tooth with a bridge, at least one tooth on either side of the space created by the missing tooth must be prepared for a crown. Then a false tooth is joined to the crowns, and the entire structure is cemented to the prepared teeth. The patient cannot remove the bridge, and special aids are available to keep it clean.

Inlay/Onlay

Inlays are more like fillings than onlays. As mentioned, they’re made in a dental lab after your dentist has removed the decay. Inlays are generally more durable and far out-last fillings. They can be fabricated from tooth-colored composite resin, porcelain or gold. They are also more conservative than crowns. Generally, much less tooth structure is removed in the preparation of inlays than crowns. Onlay is essentially identical to inlays with the exception that one or more cusps have been included in the preparation. In other words, decay or trauma has affected the cusps, necessitating their replacement. Onlay may be composed of the same materials as inlays - tooth - colored composite resin, porcelain or gold. They are sometimes also referred to as partial crowns.

 Denture

There are two types of dentures: complete dentures and partial dentures. Complete dentures replace all of the teeth in either the upper or lower part of the mouth. Partial dentures can replace several teeth, but not all of the teeth in an arch. Complete dentures are held in place through suction, or the close adaptation of the denture base to the surface area of your tissues. Partial dentures are held in place by metal clasps which wrap around remaining teeth. One significant disadvantages of dentures lies in the resorption of underlying bone. Depending on the condition and anatomy of your mouth, other alternatives may be available besides dentures. Implants in conjunction with fixed bridges are often very successful in replacing missing teeth. Under normal chewing conditions, the roots of teeth apply stress to the underlying bone which maintains it and prevents it from atrophy. While implants deliver similar stresses and maintain bone, dentures do not.
